So, this is the first place I've seen a reference to a J2BE : Java 2 Browser Edition, and I think it's a great idea, sorely overdue.
J2SE is great for full blown desktop apps. WebStart works great. But... if you don't have J2SE installed, it's a pretty big download. In theory, there is supposed to be a mechanism coming someday for only downloading part of the J2SE runtime, and then downloading the rest on an as-needed basis. Unfortunately, that's only spreading out the pain - it's still a pretty large download. How about using J2ME as the foundation for the new J2BE? If you did, would this help spur J2ME adoption? I'd love to be able to access the same J2ME mini-app in my browser on my cellphone... |
